There are several ways to contribute data to Overture. The right pathway for your organization depends on the data: its type, coverage, ownership, licensing, and other factors. Here are some general guidelines.
Via OpenStreetMap
This is the fastest route to get data into Overture’s transportation, buildings, divisions, and base themes. Overture ingests OSM data sub-weekly, so an edit made today could appear in the next Overture release. Data you contribute to OSM is subject to the Open Database License, so we recommend you consult your own legal advisor first. If you are contributing a whole dataset rather than editing as an individual mapper, start with the OSM import guidelines.
Via Esri Community Maps
This might be the best pathway for organizations that already work within the Esri ecosystem and maintain authoritative data: cities, counties, states, national mapping agencies, utilities, campuses. Data contributed through the Esri Community Maps program flows into Overture as part of our regular source ingestion. The Esri Community Maps team sets the terms and the review process. Via OpenAddresses
OpenAddresses is one of our primary sources of data for the addresses theme. If you hold authoritative address data for a jurisdiction, we recommend contributing it to OpenAddresses.
Direct to Overture
This is the preferred pathway for places data, and we are actively seeking contributions from POI maintainers, providers, and brokers. You can propose a dataset by opening a GitHub issue or emailing us at community@overturemaps.org. Here’s what we’d like to know:
- What the data covers, geographically and thematically, and roughly how many features it contains
- The license, and confirmation that you have the right to release it under a license compatible with the relevant Overture theme
- How it is maintained and how often it changes
- Whether the features likely already exist in Overture from another source
For non-places data, this is often the slowest route to getting data into Overture, and we encourage you to consider other pathways. You can still submit a proposal, following the guidelines above, but we cannot guarantee a timeline for acceptance of your data.
