The automotive industry is undergoing a technological transformation, with connected vehicles, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and the pursuit of autonomous driving reshaping the landscape. In this dynamic environment, OEMs are under pressure to deliver unique, high-quality in-car experiences that differentiate their brands and capture consumer loyalty.
High-quality map data is a critical component of these experiences, but the limitations of existing maps platforms and complexities of building and maintaining maps and local data can be significant hurdles.
Overture Maps Foundation, a collaborative project under the Linux Foundation, is rising to this challenge.
A New Way to Map Together
At Overture, we don’t make just another map. It’s a group effort to create open, interoperable map datasets encouraging cooperation among a diverse group of members, including tech companies, car manufacturers & suppliers, and mapping specialists.
This way, Overture is making a map that’s more accurate and up-to-date than any single organization could achieve alone.
Helping the Automotive Industry
Overture Maps gets the unique challenges the automotive industry faces. Modern vehicles create a lot of sensor data that could change mapping, but this potential is often not used because it’s hard to process, standardize, and integrate the data. Overture’s collaborative model tackles these challenges directly.
Overture is making a platform where OEMs and suppliers can combine their resources and knowledge, share data and standards, and create better maps together. This way of working allows automotive OEMs and suppliers to focus on what they do best: creating differentiated in-car experiences that delight their customers.
Automotive Innovation with Open Maps
The open and interoperable nature of Overture’s platform gives OEMs and suppliers control and flexibility over their mapping solutions. They can easily combine Overture’s data with their own data sources, making maps that fit their brand and that their customers want.
Here’s how Overture Maps helps OEMs build maps-based experiences:
- High-Quality Map Foundation: Overture’s base map provides detailed road networks, points of interest, buildings, and other important base map data. This is a strong foundation for OEMs to build on, making sure their navigation and ADAS features are reliable and up-to-date.
- Easy Data Integration: The Global Entity Reference System (GERS), a key part of Overture Maps, allows for easy integration of data from different sources with the Overture map. OEMs and suppliers can easily combine Overture’s data with their own data, such as real-time traffic information, sensor data from their vehicles, or data from other providers. This flexibility allows for creating very customized and personalized in-car experiences.
- Better Navigation and ADAS Features: Overture’s map data, combined with real-time information and OEM-specific data, can be used to create advanced navigation and ADAS features. This includes features like lane-level guidance, real-time traffic updates, hazard warnings, and predictive routing, all of which make driving safer and more enjoyable. OEMs and suppliers are also starting to leverage Overture’s data platform to develop new features like augmented reality (AR) navigation, personalized recommendations for points of interest, and AI-powered conversational interfaces that improve the overall user experience.
TomTom: Leading the Way in Collaborative Mapping
TomTom, a leader in navigation and mapping products and steering member of the Overture Maps Foundation, is a great example of how the automotive ecosystem can leverage Overture Maps to drive innovation. By combining Overture’s base map with its own data layers and expertise, TomTom has greatly improved its products and services – including for the automotive industry. This has enabled better navigation and local search capabilities and, most recently, the development of new features like AI-powered conversational interfaces and EV-specific routing.
Overture’s base map provides TomTom with a reliable and accurate starting point for their mapping solutions. This allows them to focus their efforts on developing innovative features and functionalities that differentiate their products in the market. At the same time, TomTom is also actively contributing to the development and improvement of Overture. For example, TomTom is generating GERS IDs to identify every road worldwide, ensuring a consistent and long-term association of identifiers.
